According to Broad Rimes (Guangyun), it refers to a woven grass tool.
Zuo Commentary (Zuozhuan), Eleventh Year of Duke Xuan mentions to hold a woven soil carrier and pound earth. The commentary states that this tool is a vessel for holding soil, woven from straw ropes, belonging to the same category as a round basket (ju).
Rites of Zhou (Zhouli), Ministry of Summer, Officer of the Clepsydra records the use of a woven carrier to distribute grain. The commentary states that this tool is used for storing grain.
Additionally, according to Master Yangs Dialects (Fangyan), it refers to an iron spade. In the Jianghuai and Southern Chu regions it is called a spade (cha), in the Yuan and Xiang regions it is called a woven carrier (ben), in the Zhao and Wei regions it is called a basket (zao), and in the Eastern Qi region it is called a wooden grain scoop (li).
