Zi Collection, Middle Volume Radical: Net (wǎng) Page 1058, Entry 05 According to the "Yutian" (Yùpiān), this is an ancient form of the character "ji" (jī). It refers to a horse's halter, a net-like device placed on a horse's head. For detailed annotations, see the entry at the seventeenth stroke under the Net radical. The "Jiyun" (Jíyùn) explains it as a rope for tethering a horse. The original character form was written as "䪂" (ji) and also as "羈" (jī). The "Book of Later Han - Biography of Ma Yuan" (Hou Hanshu - Mayuan Zhuan) records: "Your servant respectfully follows the ceremonial halter within the ritual." The commentary explains: "The pronunciation of '䩭' (ji) is 'ju qi fan'."
