Pianhai, pronounced jia (rising tone), refers to reeds and rushes. Shuowen Jiezi explains it as reeds that have not yet sprouted. Beitang Shuchao records that 䈔 can also be written as 笳. Songshu - Yuezhi records that 䈔 is a musical instrument created by Li Boyang when he entered the Xirong region, also known as 箛.
