Pronounced ai (rising tone).
According to the Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen), it refers to a short person.
According to the Lei Pian (Lei Pian), it means short or stunted.
In the Yilin (Yilin): An ape falls from a high tree, without injuring its hands or feet.
In the Yeke Congtan (Yeke Congtan) by Wang Mao: In a poem by Huang Luzhi, it is written: The short golden pot is willingly sent. The commentary cites the Yupian (Yupian): The term ba means short. The term ai means not long. One does not know that the two characters ba and zhi appear in the commentary to the Zhou Li (Rites of Zhou), Chun Guan, Dian Tong. Ba is pronounced bai (rising tone). Zhi is pronounced zhi (rising tone). According to the Fangyan (Fangyan), in the regions between Guilin, calling a person short is described as ba zhi, where zhi is correctly pronounced as the character ai.
According to the Jiyun (Jiyun), it is sometimes written as the variant form xie.
