As defined in the Analytical Dictionary of Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it refers to false speech. It cites the Book of Odes (Shijing): The people’s false speech. In the current version of the Lesser Odes (Xiaoya), it is written as e.
According to the Jade Chapters (Yupian), it also means false, to transform, or to move. It further refers to seditious speech. See the detailed entry for the character e.
In the Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shanhaijing), it is noted that on Mount Zhang'e there is a bird called the Bifang; when it appears, the town will have strange fires. The commentary states that e is also a variant form of the character e.
Also pronounced wa (level tone). It is the same as the character hua (to clamor).
Also pronounced gui. It is the same as the character gui (deceptive).
