Pronounced reng (falling tone) and er (falling tone) in "Tang Yun" and "Ji Yun," and pronounced er (falling tone) in "Zheng Yun," similar to "er."
"Shuowen Jiezi" explains it as cutting off the ear, with the character composed of "knife" and "ear."
"Book of Documents (Shangshu) - Kang Gao" records: "It is not you who, in your fief, cuts off noses and ears as punishment; do not arbitrarily inflict the punishment of cutting off noses and ears on people."
Also pronounced niu (falling tone) and rui (falling tone) in "Ji Yun," similar to "rui," with the same meaning.
