Pronounced ao.
According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen), it describes a mountain with many small stones. It also refers to Mount Ao, located in the land of Lu. It is also interchangeably written as the variant form (ao).
According to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it describes the appearance of a tall mountain. In the Farewell to a Friend (Bie Zhi Fu) by Han Yu: The mountains are tall and follow one another.
Pronounced ao (falling tone).
According to the Jade Chapters (Yupian), Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), and Classified Dictionary (Leipian), it refers to a trembling or shaking appearance. In the Hedong Rhapsody (Hedong Fu) by Yang Xiong: Vast and expansive, heaven and earth are filled and shifting. According to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it is also written in a variant form.
