Explanation from the Origin of Chinese Names (Shuowen Jiezi): Five bundles make a zi. Another source says: the count from ten-thousand-million to ten-thousand is called a zi.
Xu says: Six-thousand-four-hundred jin.
Book of Odes (Shijing), Zhou Hymns: Ten-thousand, one-hundred-million, and zi.
Commentary: The count from ten-thousand to ten-thousand is called one-hundred-million, and the count from one-hundred-million to one-hundred-million is called a zi.
Also, from Comprehensive Customs (Fengsu Tong): One-thousand generates ten-thousand, ten-thousand generates one-hundred-million, one-hundred-million generates zhao, zhao generates jing, jing generates zi, zi generates gai, gai generates rang, rang generates gou, gou generates jian, jian generates zheng, zheng generates zai; zai is what the earth cannot carry.

Broad Rhymes (Guangyun): Located in Guizhou. Qu Yuan was from this county; when he was exiled, his sister came to him, and the place was named accordingly. Zi is the same as the word for older sister.
