In the Explanation of Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it refers to sediment. In the letter From Li Ling to Su Wu, it refers to the constant accumulation of mud and dregs. It also refers to the liquid and dregs combined. In the commentary on the Rites of Zhou (Zhouli), specifically the Spring Officials section regarding sweet spirits, it describes how the liquid and the sediment are mixed together after brewing. It further refers to a zifang, the name of a type of implement. In the Classic of Tea (Chajing) by Lu Yu, it describes the zifang as a tool used to collect various types of dregs. It is also pronounced in the level tone. In the Biography of Qu Yuan within the Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), it is used in the phrase concerning one who dwells within the filth and mud but remains unstained. The commentary notes the pronunciation as zi.
