To feel with the hand; to measure with the fingers. Also, according to the Zhengzitong, it is a vulgar form of the character zan (squeezing between fingers). In the History of the Tang Dynasty (Tangshu), Record of Magadha, it is recorded that Emperor Taizong sent an envoy to obtain the method for refining sugar, and issued an imperial decree to Yangzhou to supply sugarcane; the juice was pressed to meet the required consistency.
