Zi Collection, Upper Volume, Page 12, Entry 03 Pronounced zhi (level tone) Explanation: A type of bird. The character is composed of "隹" and uses "支" as the phonetic component. Also recorded in "Jiyun" as sometimes written as "鳷". "Yupian" mentions that Emperor Wu of Han built a palace called "Zhi Que Guan" (Palace of the Zhi Que Bird), located in Yunyang. The "Shanglin Fu" (Fu on the Upper Park) by Sima Xiangru contains the sentence "Guo Zhi Que". The commentary cites Xu Guang's explanation: this is the name of a palace in the Ganquan Palace. "Yunhui" records that this character is also a homophone for the character "枝" (zhī). Another explanation mentioned in "Shuowen Jiezi" is "䧴度" (zhī dù). "Yunhui" explains this as similar to the modern meaning of "度支" (dù zhī), meaning to plan, calculate, or allocate.
