Ji Yun and Lei Pian state the phonetic reading is zhe plus ge, pronounced zhai (rising tone). Explaining the Characters and Writing (Shuowen Jiezi) defines it as a mallet. Jade Chapters (Yupian) defines it as the crossbar on a mallet. Regional Languages (Fangyan) records: in the regions west of the pass it is called a mallet, its crossbar is called song, and in the Qi region it is called chi. In Lei Pian it is sometimes written in the variant forms de, di, or yi. The character di was originally incorrectly written as zhai.
