From Tang Rimes (Tángyùn), Collected Rimes (Jíyùn), Rime Compendium (Yùnhuì), and Correct Rimes (Zhèngyùn): pronounced zhí zhèng qiè, sound zheng. A country name. Explanations of Names (Shìmíng) states: Zheng means flat fields, because this place has many flat fields. Correct Character Compendium (Zhengzìtōng) states: Zheng was originally land within the imperial domain of the Western Capital. King Xuan of Zhou enfeoffed his younger brother You here, which became the State of Zheng. Duke Huan of Zheng entrusted his family and possessions to the States of Guo and Kuai. His son, Duke Wu of Zheng, helped King Ping of Zhou settle in the Eastern Capital, and subsequently relocated the fief, using the old state name for the new city, which became Xinzheng. This is now Zhengzhou in Kaifeng Prefecture, Henan. There is also Nanzheng, a county name. It now belongs to Hanzhong Prefecture, Shaanxi. Duke Huan's fief was within the imperial domain, called Xizheng (Western Zheng). Hanzhong is south of Jingzhao, hence it is called Nanzheng (Southern Zheng) to distinguish it. Comprehensive Gazetteer (Yītǒng Zhì) states: Nanzheng was a city belonging to the ancient State of Bao. After Duke Huan of Zheng died, his people fled south and settled here, hence it was called Nanzheng. Also, from Vast Rimes (Guǎngyùn): Zhengzhong means diligent and earnest. The Book of Han (Hànshū), Biography of Wang Mang states: This is not what August Heaven earnestly intends to bestow as a mandate. Also a surname. Collected Rimes (Jíyùn) states: The State of Zheng was destroyed by the State of Han, and its descendants subsequently used the state name as their surname.
