Shuowen Jiezi explains it as a type of mulberry tree.
Can Shu (Book of Silkworms) records: Using the leaves of the zhe tree to feed silkworms results in silk that can be used for the strings of lutes and zithers, with a sound clearer and brighter than ordinary silk.
Zhou Li: Kao Gong Ji (Record of Trades) records: Regarding the method of selecting wood for crafting bows, zhe wood is considered the best.
