Hai Collection, Middle Volume Radical: Bird (niǎo) Zhui Kangxi Stroke Count: 19 Page 1493, Entry 02 Pronounced zhui This is a species of small turtle dove, currently known as the collared dove. Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen) defines this as the zhu dove. Book of Odes (Shijing), Lesser Odes (Xiao Ya) contains the line, flying about is the zhui dove. Mao Commentary (Maozhuan) states that the zhui is also known as the fubu bird. Zheng Commentary (Zhengjian) describes it as a cautious, sincere, and filial bird. The character was originally written as zhui. Erya (Erya), Interpretation of Birds states: The zhuiqi is the gufu bird. Sub-commentary (Shu) explains: The zhui also goes by the name fu. It is the bird known today as the chu dove. Note: The zhui has numerous names; it is also called zhuiqi, zhu dove, gufu, quju, jiu, chu dove, jing dove, jiu, kang dove, jiu, gao, pi-gao, fen dove, and ru dove; these are all variant names for the zhui. There is also the qing-zhui, which in the Materia Medica (Bencao) is known by the alternative name huanghehou. The original printed character is composed of the elements for lang and bird. The gao character is sometimes written in a variant form (gao).
