The rhyme dictionaries Tang Yun (Tangyun) and Ji Yun (Jiyun) state that the pronunciation is the same as 煑 (zhǔ). The Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen Jiezi) explains it as 亯 (xiǎng). Some forms of the character include the radical for fire, written as 煑 (zhǔ). Other forms include the radical for water in the middle, written as . The Zhou Li (Zhōulǐ), in the chapter Tian Guan (Tianguan) and section Yan Ren (Yǎn Rén), records: 'For all matters of blending, boil salt and await orders.'
