Pronounced zhou (falling tone). Shi Zhou was the name of the Grand Historian under King Xuan of the Zhou Dynasty who created the Large Seal script. According to the Examination of Calligraphy (Fashukao), the Zhou script was created by Shi Zhou and differs slightly from the ancient Large Seal script. Later generations used his name to refer to this typeface, calling it the Zhou script. The Seven Summaries (Qilue) states: This is the script used by historians of the Zhou Dynasty to teach school children. Its form differs from the ancient scripts discovered within the walls of Confucius's old residence, which are known as strange characters (qizi). Its remnants are preserved in the Stone Drum Inscriptions (Shiguwen). According to the Compilation on Studying the Ancients (Xuegubian), after Li Si created the Small Seal script, the Zhou script became known as the Large Seal script. Also, according to the Explaining Graphs (Shuowen), it refers to the act of reading books.
