The "Jade Jar" (Yupian) records this as the ancient form of the character "zhi". The "Shuowen Jiezi" explains it as meaning "chu". The character's form resembles grass after its initial sprouting stage, with stems gradually growing larger, showing a movement and development. The horizontal stroke below represents the earth. It is also a surname. In clerical script, it is written as "zhi".
