According to the Analytical Dictionary of Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it refers to a rope for cattle.
According to the Jade Chapters (Yupian), it means a cord. It is also written in a variant form (zhen).
In the Book of Rites (Liji), section on Lesser Ceremonial Procedures (Shaoyi): When dealing with cattle, hold the rope. Commentary: The rope is used to tether and control them.
Also in the Book of Rites (Liji), section on The Meaning of Sacrifices (Jitong): And upon welcoming the sacrificial animal, the ruler holds the rope. Sub-commentary: The rope is the cord attached to the bull's nose.
Also according to the Collection of Rhymes (Jiyun), pronounced yin (rising tone). The meaning is the same.
