According to the Collected Rimes (Jiyun), the Rime Assembly (Yunhui), and the Correct Rimes (Zhengyun), the character's pronunciation is indicated by the combined sounds of zhī and rèn, sounded as zhèn. It means a young boy. Ten thousand young boys — Eastern Metropolis Rhapsody (Dongjing Fu) by Zhang Heng. The commentary by Xue Zong states: The term zhèn means good; a good boy refers to a young child. According to the Records of Ceremonies (Liyi Zhi) in the Book of the Later Han (Hou Han Shu), on the day before the winter sacrifice, a grand exorcism ritual is held. One hundred and twenty young eunuchs between the ages of ten and twelve are selected as zhèn boys. They wear red turbans and black clothing, carrying large drums to drive away plague-bearing spirits. Additionally, zhèn boys are also used for funeral dirges. Furthermore, according to the Dialects (Fangyan) by Yang Zi, people in the regions of Yan and Qi call horse grooms zhèn.
