According to the Tang Rhyme (Tangyun) and the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it is pronounced zhe. It is synonymous with the character for dismemberment. Zhe-mo is the name of an insect, also known as the grasshopper. Another pronunciation is zhai, which is synonymous with the character for narrow. It belongs to the cicada family.
The Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi) records that the zhe-meng is an insect found on grass. A detailed explanation can be found in the entry for the character meng.
According to the Six Writings Corrected (Liushu Zheng’e), it is also written in a variant form (zha), but this is incorrect.
According to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it is the same as the character for a type of earth-dwelling insect. A detailed explanation can be found in the entry for that character.
