Tang Yun, Yunhui: This is the archaic form of the character Claw. For a detailed explanation, see the radical section. Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi) states that this refers to the nails of the fingers and toes. The shape of the character resembles nails growing from the tips of the fingers. According to Correcting Errors (Zhenge): when the back of the hand is facing downward, it is called a claw. The character (cha) represents the shape of the nails of the fingers and toes. To separate claw and (cha) into two distinct characters is being overly pedantic.
