Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen): A type of tree. Identical to the zha variant. It resembles a pear but is sour.
Book of Zhuangzi (Zhuangzi), chapter Heaven's Revolutions (Tianyun pian): Ritual, righteousness, laws, and measures are like the zha, pear, tangerine, and pomelo; their tastes are opposites, yet all are agreeable to the mouth.
Also, Ouyang Xiu, Record of Returning to the Fields (Guitian lu): When first produced, it is as hard as stone. If one places a single Chinese quince or zha among a hundred others, they will ripen and become soft like mud; people call this baking.
