Zi Collection, Page Position: Upper. Radical: Mouth (kǒu). Page 187, Entry 06. Pronounced zha. Explanations in the Broad Rhymes (Guangyun) and Collected Rhymes (Jiyun) state it is pronounced zha. It is homophonous with the character meaning to open wide. The Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi) defines it as the appearance of thick lips. The character form is composed of the components for many and for still. The commentary by Xu Kai states: many implies the meaning of thick. Also, the Jade Chapter (Yupian) defines it as the appearance of a slack mouth. Also, the Broad Rhymes (Guangyun) gives the pronunciation as cha, and the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun) gives the pronunciation as cha, making it homophonous with the character for disappointed. It shares the same meaning as the explanation found in the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi).
