Pronounced zao.
According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it means swift or rapid. In the Five Classics Script (Wujing Wenzi), it is synonymous with the character for impatient or restless (zao). In the History of the Former Han (Qianhan Shu), Astronomical Treatise, it is written: when using military force, one should be calm; if one is restless, it is ominous.
Furthermore, according to the Five Sounds Rhyme Compendium (Wuyin Jiyun), it is pronounced sao. It refers to the wobbling of a feathered arrow. In the Rites of Zhou (Zhouli), Winter Official, Artificers Record (Kaogongji), it is written: if the feathers are killed, it is restless.
Note: In the commentary to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), Chen Xuan and others state: today, people commonly write this as the variant for restless (zao), but this is incorrect; in the classical texts, both characters are used interchangeably.
