Zi Collection, Page Position: Lower, Radical: Ear (ěr), Page 1350, Entry 07 Written as haiqie in Tangyun, and zihaiqie in Jiyun and Yunhui. Pronounced zai. According to Shuowen Jiezi, the regions of Yizhou and Liangzhou called deafness "zhi". People in the Qin and Jin regions called the condition of being able to hear but not clearly, or hearing but not understanding, "zhi". Xu notes that this is not complete deafness. Yupian explains it as half-deafness.
