Ji Yun states it is pronounced yu (falling-rising tone). It is the same as the character for a granary (yu). The Analytical Dictionary of Chinese Characters (Shuowen Jiezi) explains it as a warehouse used for storing grain transported by water. Another interpretation refers to an open-air granary without a roof. It is also used as a surname.
