Pronounced yu.
According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it means to bend. Another interpretation is to wind or twist.
In the Book of Rites (Zhouli), specifically the Winter Craftsman section of the Record of Trades (Kaogongji), regarding arrow makers, if the middle is weak, it becomes yu. Commentary: Yu means to bend or curve.
In the Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), in the Biography of Qu Yuan, it says that grievances and knots are yu and zhen. Commentary: Yu means to bend.
Also, according to the Erudite Observations (Boya), yu refers to ropes or cords.
Also a surname. According to the Broad Rhymes (Guangyun), during the Later Qin dynasty, there was an official named Yu Miao, the Marquis of Feixiang and Shiping.
Also pronounced xu. The meaning is the same.
Also pronounced ou. According to the Classified Chapters (Leipian), Yangyu is the name of a mountain.
Also, as a rhyme supplement, it rhymes with the sound wei-yu. In Ma Rong’s Eulogy of Guangcheng (Guangcheng Song), it is written: Vast and imposing, lingering and winding. Resting in corners and relying on barriers, no one dares to provoke or resist.
