Chen Collection, Middle Volume Radical: Tree (mù) Kangxi Strokes: 19 Page 559, Entry 29 Pronounced you. According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it is an implement for leveling fields. It cites the Analects (Lunyu): "leveling the soil without ceasing." In the Analects, it is originally written with the character pronounced you (leveling). Both characters are interchangeable. In the Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), Annals of the First Emperor: "Hoes, leveling implements, and white clubs." Xu Guang says: "The character is a field implement." The Commentary on the Records of the Grand Historian (Suoyin) states: "Xu considers it a field implement, which is incorrect." Meng Kang considers it the handle of a hoe, which is likely closer to the truth. Also, in the Rhyme Collection (Yunhui), it is defined as a mallet for breaking up clods of earth.
