According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it means peaceful. It is composed of the heart radical with yan functioning as a phonetic indicator. It is also used interchangeably with the character yan.
In the Book of Odes (Shijing), Xiaoya section, it appears as yan yan ye yin. The Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi) cites this passage using the character 懕. The commentary by Zhu Xi states that yan yan means peaceful, and also implies duration. It suggests that when drinking for a long time, one becomes slightly intoxicated and exhibits a calm and composed demeanor.
