Kangxi Dictionary

Zi Collection, Upper Volume, Page 7, Entry 01 Radical: Grass (cǎo) "Book of Rhymes (Jiyun)" and "Rhyme Meeting (Yunhui)" state that this character is pronounced "yu ji qie," similar to the falling tone of "yi." "Yutian (Yutian)" explains it as deep black. In Han Yu's "Monument to King Xu Yan's Temple (Xuyanwang Miaobei)," it is used in the phrase "black and dim, then extinguished." Also, "Guangyun (Guangyun)" annotates the pronunciation as "yu ji qie," sounding like "yi." Furthermore, "Book of Rhymes (Jiyun)" records other pronunciations: one is "ying jie qie," sounding like "ai"; another is "yu xian qie," sounding like "yin"; and a third is "yi xia qie," sounding like "ya." The meanings of these pronunciations are all the same.
