Pronounced jiao. Same as the character meaning deep. It also refers to a hidden or dark place. According to the Explaining Names (Shiming), the character means deep and secluded. In the Upper Forest Rhapsody (Shanglin Fu) by Sima Xiangru, it is used to describe deep caves and chambers. It also refers to an inner room. In the Elegies of Chu (Chuci), specifically the Summoning of the Soul (Zhaohun) section, it mentions deep inner chambers. The commentary notes that it refers to an inner room.
