Ancient script. Tang Rhymes (Tangyun) and Collected Rhymes (Jiyun) and Rhyme Collection (Yunhui) state: pronounced yao. Broadly Elegant (Boya) states: to bind or covenant. Analects of Confucius (Lunyu): To hold a long-standing covenant and not forget the words of one's life. Commentary: Long-standing covenant means an old agreement. Zuo Tradition (Zuozhuan), 14th year of Duke Ai: If you had made Ji Lu intercept me, I would not have entered into an alliance.
