"Book of Rhymes (Guangyun)", "Collection of Rhymes (Jiyun)", and "Rhyme Meeting (Yunhui)" all note the pronunciation as "wang fa qie," with the same sound as "yue." "Explanations of Characters (Shuowen Jiezi)" explains it as "adornment of colors." Another explanation refers to the decoration of chariots and horses. "Jade Compendium (Yupian)" explains it as "colored silk gauze." "Notes on the Jijiupian" states: 䋐 is woven with colored silk threads, which is what is now called "woven fabric." Huang Shi says it is ramie cloth. "Classified Compendium (Leipian)" explains it as fine cloth.
