Yuan chu is a type of bird in the phoenix family. In the Autumn Floods (Qiushui) chapter of the Zhuangzi, it is written that there is a bird in the south called the yuan chu. Sometimes also written in a variant form (wan). In the Rhapsody on the Sir Fantasy (Zixu fu) by Sima Xiangru, it is recorded as wan chu kong luan.
