Ancient form. Pronounced ruǎn. Pronounced yuǎn (rising tone). According to the Explaining and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it means distant. According to the Expanded Rhymes (Guangyun), it means remote. According to the Orthography of Rhymes (Zhengyun), it refers to the fixed state of distance. Also pronounced yuàn (departing tone). According to the Orthography of Rhymes, it means to distance someone. The word for distance is in the rising tone, such as in the Book of Odes (Shijing): those people are far away. The word for distancing or moving away from is in the departing tone, such as in the Analects (Lunyu): to respect spirits and gods but keep them at a distance. Also pronounced yuān. Book of Odes (Shijing), Lesser Odes: You are far away, and the people are all like this. Commonly written as a variant form (yuǎn).
