"Book of Odes (Shijing)" defines it as a type of plum tree.
"Compendium of Materia Medica (Tang Bencao)" states that the plum tree (yǒu lǐ) is also called sparrow plum (què lǐ), cart-underneath plum (chē xià lǐ), or棣子 (dì zi). Its fruit is smaller than a cherry and ripens in May.
"Explanations of the Odes (Shi Gu)" identifies it as red 棣 (chì dì).
"Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shanhaijing)" describes a tree on Mount Tàishì that resembles a pear tree with red grain. This tree, named 栯 (yǒu), is said to bestow the wearer with freedom from jealousy.
