Pronounced yòng. Meaning to block or obstruct. Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), Annals of Qin: The Yellow River breached its banks and could not be blocked again. Another meaning is to pile soil for coverage or to bank up with earth, which is a dialect term used in regions south of the Yangtze River. Piling soil around the roots of plants and watering them is called yòng. It is also the name of a type of grass. The Gorgon euryale is also known as jīyōng, as seen in the Materia Medica (Bencao).
Also pronounced yōng. Interchangeable with yōng. In the Rites of Zhou (Zhouli), the term yōngshì, and in the Book of Han (Hanshu), Treatise on Rivers and Canals, the term yōng is written as yōng.
Also pronounced yǒng. Interchangeable with yōng (to embrace or gather). The meaning is the same.
