The Zihui (Compilation of Characters) uses the two characters yi and yi to provide the pronunciation, which is read as yi (fourth tone). The Plain Questions (Suwen) states: if the pulse at the wrist is slow and rough, it is called jie yi. It is also a name for a medical condition in which one can eat but still lose weight, referred to as shi yi.
