Sound of Compilation (Jiyun): Pronounced ye. Same as the character meaning to lift or manipulate. The term jia-yu refers to gesturing or toying with one's hands. According to the Poetry of Bai Juyi: At times pointed at by people, frequently mocked and teased by ghosts. Also written as the character meaning to lift. Sometimes also written as the variant forms ya or xu. According to the Analytical Dictionary of Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it is written as ya. In the History of the Later Han (Hou Hanshu), it is written as xie. Separately written as ye. Refer to the notes under the characters for yu and ye for further details.
