In the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it is written as ya. Some write it as ye. The Broad Rhymes (Guangyun) records: The ye tree is produced in Jiaozhou, and its leaves are similar on both sides. Guo Pu says: It resembles a palm tree. Zhang Heng's Ode to the Southern Capital (Nandu Fu) writes: The ya and fan palm trees. The Categorized Collection (Leipian) records: The tree grows to several tens of zhang in height, with leaves growing at the tips of the branches, and the fruit peel contains a liquid as sweet as wine.
