Zi Collection, Page Position: Upper, Radical: Person (rén), Page 10, Entry 03 Pronounced yao. From "Book of Odes (Shijing)" with "yī xiāo" as fanqie. Explained in "Yùpiān" as a belt or loop. "Book of Odes (Shijing)" states "yāo zhī jī zhī," with Mao's commentary explaining "yāo" as a belt. "Book of Jin (Jinshu)" records that in the early Taishi era, clothing was narrow at the top and wide at the bottom, and wearers had to tie their belts (yāo) tightly. Also found in "Lèipiān" with "yī xiào" as fanqie, pronounced yao. Refers to the lapel or hem of a garment. Sometimes also written in a variant form (yāo).
