According to the Yupian (Jade Chapters) and the Zhengyun (Correct Rhymes), the pronunciation of this character is yao. The Shuowen Jiezi (Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters) explains its meaning as joy.
In addition, the Yangzi Fangyan (Yang's Dialect) mentions that in regions west of Hangu Pass, the variation in the size of things is referred to as this term. The Shuowen Changjian (Extended Notes on Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters) states that in local customs, comparing this to that is referred to as this term. Later, it was also used interchangeably with the character meaning to shine. Furthermore, when two parties deceive and bewilder each other, it is referred to as being mutually deluded.
