Pronounced yuān (falling tone). From "Book of Odes" (Shijing), it describes the appearance of streamers on a banner as curled and extended. The character is from the "Sprout" (cǎo) radical. It curves and hangs down, resembling the movement of banner streamers in the wind.
Also used in personal names. The character is Ziyou. "Yupian" explains it as the meaning of dance and song. Now written as "yǎn".
Also, from "Guangyun" and "Jiyun", pronounced yuān (falling tone). Pronounced the same as "yǎn". The meaning is the same.
