Yin Collection, Upper Volume Radical: Child (zǐ) Entry: ya Kangxi Stroke Count: 12 Page 280, Entry 11 Compendium of Phonology (Jiyun) and Classified Chapters (Leipian): Pronounced ya. It refers to a newborn infant. Compendium of Phonology (Jiyun) also states: The people of Wu refer to a newborn infant as ya. Textual Criticism: The Dialects (Fangyan) by Yang Xiong states that the people of Wu refer to a newborn infant as ya. I have carefully examined this; The Dialects (Fangyan) does not contain this term. It is found in the notes for the character in the Compendium of Phonology (Jiyun). I have accordingly changed the citation from The Dialects (Fangyan) by Yang Xiong to the Compendium of Phonology (Jiyun) also states.
