Zi Collection, Page Position: Upper, Radical: Water (shuǐ), Page 312, Entry 03 Pronounced yā. A type of fish, called a yellow catfish in the "Compendium of Materia Medica" (Bencao). It is also called yā, and has no scales. The "Piya" records that the gall bladder of the yā fish is near the upper part of its body in spring and summer, and near the lower part in autumn and winter. The "Zhengzitong" describes its body and tail as similar to a catfish, with a yellow belly and a blue-green back. It has two crossbones beneath its gills and two barbels. When swimming in schools, they make a "ya ya" sound. It is also called huangxie yu. It is also called huangsang yu.
