Per the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it means to follow or be compliant. It is also used interchangeably with the character meaning humble or yielding (xùn). In the Book of Yu (Yushu), it is written that the five categories of social relationships were not practiced with humility. The ancient edition of the Book of Documents (Shangshu) uses this character.
