Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen) defines this as beautiful jade.
Guangyun (Guangyun) states it is the name of a type of jade.
Book of Documents (Shujing), Chapter on the Canon of Shun (Shundian): "Used the jade armillary sphere (xuanji) and the jade measuring tube (yuheng) to regulate the seven celestial bodies."
Commentary (Zhuan) explains xuan as beautiful jade.
Biography of King Mu, Son of Heaven (Mu Tianzi Zhuan): "The precious xuan pearls of the Son of Heaven."
Note (Zhu) clarifies it belongs to the jade category.
Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shanhaijing): "On the mountain of the Queen Mother of the West, there are xuangui."
Guo Pu in the Rhapsody on the Yangtze River (Jiang Fu): "Liao, liu, xuan, and gui."
Additionally, Jiyun (Jiyun) records the pronunciation as gui, which is identical in sound to gui. It is also pronounced rui, identical in sound to rui. The meaning is the same. Jiyun (Jiyun) notes that the ancient seal script (zhòu wén) is written as rui. It may also be written as xuan or xuan.
