Rites of Zhou (Zhouli), Office of Spring (Chunguan), Carriage Attendant (Jinche): Painted in red and black (xiu shi). Commentary: Xiu refers to a color that is mostly red with some black.
Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), Biographies of Money Makers (Huozhi Zhuan): One thousand lacquered wooden implements (muqi xiu zhe qian mei). Commentary: Xu Guang states: Xiu is lacquer.
History of the Former Han (Qianhan Shu), Biography of Empress Zhao (Zhao Huanghou Zhuan): The hall was coated in lacquer. Commentary: Shigu states: Coating objects with lacquer is called xiu. In the current customs of the Guandong region, items that have been repeatedly coated with lacquer are called shaoqi. Shao is a phonetic variation of xiu.
