Pronounced xing.
Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen): Originally written as a variant form. It is a vessel.
Guangyun (Guangyun): A sacrificial vessel.
Yupian (Yupian): A vessel for thick soup.
Rites of Zhou (Zhouli): For sacrifices, provide the large soup and the xing soup.
Commentary: When five flavors are added to soup, it is served in a xing vessel, hence it is called xing soup.
Book of Etiquette and Ceremonial (Yili): The master of offerings sets out the xing.
Commentary: The xing is a vessel for vegetable and meat soups.
Sub-commentary: When referring to the soup contained within the xing, it is called xing soup. When referring to the vessel itself, it is called a xing cauldron.
History of the Former Han (Qian Hanshu): Yao and Shun ate from earthen bowls and sipped from earthen xing.
